A Short Course in Happiness After Loss brings to us a powerful intersection of the science of positive psychology and the wisdom necessary to thrive when facing life’s harshest moments. In poetic, compassionate and yet fearless language, Sirois traverses the territories we most fear—death, exile, disease—and carefully lights pathways toward a happiness that includes the scars of our suffering and the bounty and goodness present within our world. Her work offers each of us, no matter the trials of our lives, a template for rising through pain into a steady, resilient and open heart, one capable of facing sorrow and loving fully and laughing richly anyway.

If you too appreciate Anne Lamott’s ability to navigate the mundane and the sacred, the heartening and the heart-rending, you will see the same black-diamond skill in navigating life’s highs and lows in this book. Like Lamott, Sirois handles joy and sorrow with whatever the moment requires -- tenderness, gusto, humor, brutal honesty, wise perspective, grace, or humility. Her combination of humor and tenderness, and total lack of pretense, makes her particularly welcome company at a time when good companions can be scarce. Like only our loved ones can understand the depth of our love for each other, and join us too in making fun of or finding humor in our humanity, she joins the reader simultaneously as expert and insider.

Dr. Sirois is very accomplished and pedigreed; yet that is by no means the sole source of her authority or connection. Yes, her academic grounding and cognitive understanding is deep. She is “there” with us, in the swamp of life, as fully and authentically as one can be. Her personal disclosure in this book – particularly her tremendous love for, and loss of, her brother -- makes it easy to trust and to hear her. She brings much practical wisdom and lived example that makes that wisdom more accessible. She builds confidence that we too can bravely take steps on a path towards wholeness and happiness. Her approach is quietly (yet deeply) informed by the science of positive psychology, and her authenticity makes the reader want to take it in.

Already I have read it twice and gifted it twice– and that will continue. For friends who have had struggles or tragic losses (after the phase of bringing dinners or helping with life's logistics has moved into "normal"), gifting Sirois's book is a tangible way to show up. I know they are grieving, but I don’t always know what to say. Thankfully, this little book is something beautiful I can offer; she says more than I ever could. So I will turn to it, again and again, and wholeheartedly encourage you to do the same.

A Short Course in Happiness After Loss and Other Dark Difficult Times edition by Maria Sirois Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

Not even close to Every Day Counts by same author. The young people in Every Day Counts teach important lessons, and Maria Sirois shares her learning from a truly caring heart. This book is from her own journey of healing from loss, and for me, it lost the connection to the shared struggle with healing and accepting inevitable death of someone close.
Every Day Counts is a must read.
This stunningly simple book is for everyone who has faced or is facing loss, illness, or suffering in life's challenges, whether big or little. Maria elegantly weaves together real life stories and science, and shows the pathway from darkness to light, providing inspiration and hope along the way. She beautifully demonstrates the power of the AND - there is darkness in life AND there is joy. There is difficulty AND there is ease. There is solitary time AND community. One of my favorite chapters is "The World Will Rise To Meet You." I've given this book to friends and family who have lost children, siblings, parents, jobs, etc. We agreed that this book is a gift, and it should be in everyone's personal library.
This book gently but firmly took my hand and reminded me that we have control over ourselves and our own happiness, despite the uncertainty and sorrow that is part of life. It also showed me practices to use to build grounded optimism, stay open to wondrous possibilities, and stay the heck out of martyr-ville. (Those of us who are care partners to people with degenerative diseases tend to get lost there sometimes.)

Maria's writing is inviting, poetic, and pragmatic. No preachiness or jargon. One of my favorite lines "We cannot change what is. But we can change how we see our day. We can attend to what is good, each day, for a moment here and a moment there, and in this way begin to build an optimism that is real and sustaining, allowing for reality as it is – with both its sharpness and graces."
This book is beautiful, wise, and inspiring. Sirois offers us reflections on dealing skillfully with loss and difficult times and teaches us how we can lean towards joy, how we can see the "heaven within hell." In this book she leads by example, sharing her own experiences with loss and introducing us to inspiring, resilient people. Rather than telling us what we should do, she tenderly guides us through stories and reflections. I recently read this book and I wouldn't say I'm in a particular dark, difficult time. I found the lessons in the book equally applicable to my regular life as they would be in the darker times. Practicing the ideas in this book now, when things are not horrific, builds capacity so that when the challenges come I can (hopefully) handle them with a bit more skill and grace. As I read I did find myself wishing this book had been written back in 2008 when I lost someone I loved dearly.

This book is for anyone who wants to learn how to create more happiness in their lives, no matter what their current circumstances are. I highly recommend this book. It is well-written, captivating, and made me cry and laugh. The short reflections make this book perfect when we just have a few minutes during those challenging times and want something that feeds our hearts, souls, and minds.
In clear, gentle, poetic, and unabashedly honest language, Maria guides us as we navigate the events in life that bring us to our knees. Even as the book empathetically reaches out to sit with you in the darkest of moments, it quietly points the way up and forward toward a happier and more meaningful life. As well as treasuring my own copy to read over and again in my own moments of grief, I have given this book to friends, family, and clients, placed it at the top of my bibliography list for the workshops I teach both for professionals and lay people in the field of death and dying, and consider it to be one of the finest works to accompany someone on their journey toward healing.
